The Himalayan Database

I have previously written about Elizabeth Hawley who had a lifelong career of cataloging climbs in the Himalayas. She passed in January 2018 but her legacy continues.

The database, and the website hosting it, is not particularly sophisticated but the legends listed in here, those still here and those since gone, remind me that there is a world of adventure out there.

Rock and Ice have re-listed an article written while Elizabeth was still conducting her adjudication of climbing feats. Whether you agree with her or not, the data she and her team collected provide insight to the world of climbing in the mountains. The people that spend so much time, effort, money and often their lives in the pursuit of summiting the iconic quests such as Mount Everest (Sagarmatha to the Nepalis or Chomolungma to the Tibetan).

The progression from information management to archives was a self taught journey and one that is not unfamiliar in many businesses and communities today.
